Part 2 – If you were only going to read fifteen fics in this fandom, here are the ones you should read…:
“Nine Eleven Ten” – WIP - Probably the most popular fic in the entire fandom, you need to read it a) to acclimate yourself to what kind of people you’re going to be associating with b) people judge you if you haven’t read it and c) to realize the extent of world building that can done with a premise such as X-Men: First Class, or Marvel Fandom if you want to be really broad.
“Limited Release” – If you don’t like this fic, or just government/law enforcement type fic in general, then this fic is a warning – for someone who’s canonically against the government, there’s a lot of fic where Erik’s in the FBI or the CIA or a detective and basically being the ooposite of a terrorist. Also, this fic is by rageprufrock. It’s the only fic she’s written for XMFC (maybe so far), but Pru is a household fandom name at this point, you probably know her, and her fics never disappoint.
“What Not To Expect When You’re Not Expecting It” – There are fandoms out there who loathe mpreg with a passion. And then there’s the X-Men fandom, who pretty much manage to insert into daily life like it’s nothing. This fic is pretty much an indicator of two tropes within the fandom: fix-its and mpreg. We’re a tragic fandom, most of the time, so we hold or fluff close to our hearts because it needs to be protected from all the angst.
“Utopia” – WIP - But don’t get too comfortable in the fluff. “Dark themes” is probably another trending genre in XMFC, and, they POP PUT OF NOWHERE, sometimes with no warning. This one has a warning, but read it as part of your training to survive. Also, this is just me bragging here, but this is also an example of what our kink meme can churn up. Because woah.
“Time To Grow” - Probably one of my favourite fix-its. They involve chess dates, dinner dates, and… well. They involve Charles and Erik dating despite their opposing sides, and the writing in this fic is exquisite. I think the appropriate summary was “if Charles hadn’t been paralysed on the beach”. Which, again, people tend to write, just to lessen the tragedy. In this case, it’s done extremely well.
“Our House, In The Middle of The Street” – One of the best AUs, because it’s a really good reflection of the actual movie. Charles is a foster parent. Enough said. If that isn’t enough to convince you, this fic spawned so much artwork, it probably has its own tag on tumblr. Pretty much a lighter Nine Elven Ten.
“Rumor Has It” – WIP - Kidfic is really popular in this fandom, because Erik and Charles are obviously gay dads. Not as much as in this fic, which is an EPIC family fic, btw. It brings together the cast in so many good ways, and makes their relationships with each other believable, beautiful and ALL THE FEELINGS. I think out of all the fics, I’d recommend this because it balances all the genres, and doesn’t lean too much into one. It’s not too dark, but not too light either. Perfect blend.
“In The Punchline” – Just a hilarious fic, which you NEED in this fandom. I have this thing, okay/ For every tragic fic I read in this fandom I have to read TEN happy fics. You might as well start collecting now. This fic is hilarious, it has the best one liners EVER, and Charles’ stream of consciousness puts all of ours TO SHAME.
“Humane Society” – X-Men fandom loves its kittens. Another trope-ish fic. Or, I think there was once a request on the kink meme about how Erik would feel about Charles if he was human, and so there are fic floating around about Charles being human and Erik being a mutant. This one is the cutest, with no inferiority or abuse or sadness. It is rainbows and puppies and awesome, all rolled into one.
“Love” – Okay, this fic should remind you that X-Men: First Class is sent in the 60’s, and that no amount of mutation can erase some of the prejudice that exist during that time. I think this fic has the right amount of balance between ‘being a good person, and knowing what prejudice feels like’ and still being a product of your time.
“Cause and Effect” – WIP – Mpreg again. This one isn’t about the mpreg, though. This is a really realistic impression of mpreg that I think you should read before any other. I know some of you just don’t like mpreg because it’s unrealistic, but this fic… is. In all the ways. Stay for the drama too, because there’s LOTS.
“Gods Among Men” – I think this fic is a really good way of seeing Charles through Erik’s eyes. Or at one side of the argument. Just read it. It’s like a primer of “who Erik and Charles are, and all the ways they are different”.
“The Noise” – X-Men fandom ALSO loves crossing over all the other movies that Michael and James have done. This one is a crossover with Wanted, a film James McAvoy did. It’s also amazing. Introducing to you the only fandom whose made such a big deal about all the OTHER roles the actors of their OTP play. It’s like we believe that all across the universe, Erik and Charles are meant to be.
“These Bridges We’ve Built” – A lot of fic tends to focus a lot of the small group of mutants in XMFC – sometimes it focuses just on Charles and Erik – this fic has a large ensemble of characters. It’s Cherik but bigger, and I like how it balances out two main characters while not forgetting that OTHER PEOPLE EXIST TOO.
“Shout It Out Loud” – Another thing XMFC writers do, or at least reference, is the ~profound mutant bond~ Erik and Charles have. Because they do have one. They are soulmates, gene mates, mind mates, every mate. This fic makes it happen contextually, rather than something that underpins the relationship between Erik and Charles.
