*no personal comments made. This list is OBJECTIVE, collected through  a mixture of responses, word count, AO3 hits and amount of fic written.

Part 2 – If you were only going to read fifteen fics in this fandom, here are the ones you should read…:

“Nine Eleven Ten” – WIP - Probably the most popular fic in the entire fandom, you need to read it a) to acclimate yourself to what kind of people you’re going to be associating with b) people judge you if you haven’t read it and c) to realize the extent of world building that can done with a premise such as X-Men: First Class, or Marvel Fandom if you want to be really broad.

“Limited Release” – If you don’t like this fic, or just government/law enforcement type fic in general, then this fic is a warning – for someone who’s canonically against the government, there’s a lot of fic where Erik’s in the FBI or the CIA or a detective and basically being the ooposite of a terrorist. Also, this fic is by rageprufrock. It’s the only fic she’s written for XMFC (maybe so far), but Pru is a household fandom name at this point, you probably know her, and her fics never disappoint.

“What Not To Expect When You’re Not Expecting It” – There are fandoms out there who loathe mpreg with a passion. And then there’s the X-Men fandom, who pretty much manage to insert into daily life like it’s nothing. This fic is pretty much an indicator of two tropes within the fandom: fix-its and mpreg. We’re a tragic fandom, most of the time, so we hold or fluff close to our hearts because it needs to be protected from all the angst.

“Utopia” – WIP - But don’t get too comfortable in the fluff. “Dark themes” is probably another trending genre in XMFC, and, they POP PUT OF NOWHERE, sometimes with no warning. This one has a warning, but read it as part of your training to survive. Also, this is just me bragging here, but this is also an example of what our kink meme can churn up. Because woah.

“Time To Grow” -  Probably one of my favourite fix-its. They involve chess dates, dinner dates, and… well. They involve Charles and Erik dating despite their opposing sides, and the writing in this fic is exquisite. I think the appropriate summary was “if Charles hadn’t been paralysed on the beach”. Which, again, people tend to write, just to lessen the tragedy.  In this case, it’s done extremely well.

“Our House, In The Middle of The Street” – One of the best AUs, because it’s a really good reflection of the actual movie. Charles is a foster parent. Enough said. If that isn’t enough to convince you, this fic spawned so much artwork, it probably has its own tag on tumblr. Pretty much a lighter Nine Elven Ten.

Rumor Has It” – WIP - Kidfic is really popular in this fandom, because Erik and Charles are obviously gay dads. Not as much as in this fic, which is an EPIC family fic, btw. It brings together the cast in so many good ways, and makes their relationships with each other believable, beautiful and ALL THE FEELINGS. I think out of all the fics, I’d recommend this because it balances all the genres, and doesn’t lean too much into one. It’s not too dark, but not too light either. Perfect blend.

“In The Punchline” – Just a hilarious fic, which you NEED in this fandom. I have this thing, okay/ For every tragic fic I read in this fandom I have to read TEN happy fics. You might as well start collecting now. This fic is hilarious, it has the best one liners EVER, and Charles’ stream of consciousness puts all of ours TO SHAME.

Humane Society” – X-Men fandom loves its kittens. Another trope-ish fic. Or, I think there was once a request on the kink meme about how Erik would feel about Charles if he was human, and so there are fic floating around about Charles being human and Erik being a mutant. This one is the cutest, with no inferiority or abuse or sadness. It is rainbows and puppies and awesome, all rolled into one.

“Love” – Okay, this fic should remind you that X-Men: First Class is sent in the 60’s, and that no amount of mutation can erase some of the prejudice that exist during that time. I think this fic has the right amount of balance between ‘being a good person, and knowing what prejudice feels like’ and still being a product of your time.

“Cause and Effect” – WIP –  Mpreg again. This one isn’t about the mpreg, though. This is a really realistic impression of mpreg that I think you should read before any other. I know some of you just don’t like mpreg because it’s unrealistic, but this fic… is. In all the ways. Stay for the drama too, because there’s LOTS.

“Gods Among Men” – I think this fic is a really good way of seeing Charles through Erik’s eyes. Or at one side of the argument. Just read it. It’s like a primer of “who Erik and Charles are, and all the ways they are different”.

“The Noise” – X-Men fandom ALSO loves crossing over all the other movies that Michael and James have done. This one is a crossover with Wanted, a film James McAvoy did. It’s also amazing. Introducing to you the only fandom whose made such a big deal about all the OTHER roles the actors of their OTP play. It’s like we believe that all across the universe, Erik and Charles are meant to be.

“These Bridges We’ve Built” – A lot of fic tends to focus a lot of the small group of mutants in XMFC – sometimes it focuses just on Charles and Erik – this fic has a large ensemble of characters. It’s Cherik but bigger, and I like how it balances out two main characters while not forgetting that OTHER PEOPLE EXIST TOO.

“Shout It Out Loud” – Another thing XMFC writers do, or at least reference, is the ~profound mutant bond~ Erik and Charles have. Because they do have one. They are soulmates, gene mates, mind mates, every mate. This fic makes it happen contextually, rather than something that underpins the relationship between Erik and Charles.

 X-Men: First Class:

"The Fine Print" - Charles deals in the trade and repair of rare books, and has more mouths to feed than he can afford. Erik Lehnsherr has Wanda and Pietro and is attractively German, and of course Charles wants to hit that, except he can't really afford the distractions, or the children might have to pay for it. Charles/Erik

Warnings: Financial problems, talk of injuries, injuries

"Chronognosis" - Charles appears in Erik's life before and after 1962 in many forms, as a little boy scared for his mother and as a man paralysed by love. A fusion with The Time Traveller's Wife. Charles/Erik

Warnings: Fusion, not a fix it, major character death

"Omega" - In a universe where all mutants are sent to Genosha after checking out for the mutant gene, Charles Xavier is still different, with parents who loved him so much they paid millions to keep their child. As a result, Charles grows up in a world that has no mutants and without the knowledge of how powerful he is. Charles/Erik

Warnings: AU, politics, talk of world domination, violence, illegal experimentation on sentient beings

"Little Birds" - If X-Men: First Class was birds. Erik and Charles are a falcon and a dove, and Erik still wants Shaw dead, while Charles takes care of sparrows. Raven is a raven, and it ends up a romantic story that rivals that of shark!Erik and dolphin!Charles. Charles/Erik

Warning: interspecies bird lovin', bird violence, birds birds birds

"An Accident of Circumstance" - Erik is a vampire who is given the honour of choosing a childe for the first time. He chooses Charles, and starts a revolution for him.  Charles/Erik

Warnings: Fusion with Vampire Academy, vampires, blood

"Celestial Navigation" - Erik and Charles are recruiting in New York city. It doesn't sound like much, but the writing is poignant and the way the fic progresses is quite amazing and charming, and all the characters, minor or otherwise, is given a kind of life they're usually not given in one-shots with too little time to pay much attention. Charles/Erik

Warnings: prejudiced minor character

"Guilty by Association" - WIP - Erik Lehnsherr is a detective and Charles Xavier is not a prostitute. Except Erik thinks he is. There's also a murder that's being covered up, and Erik wants to get to the bottom of it, to the bottom of everything, including why there's a picture of very, rich, very powerful Brian Xavier with his arm around Charles on Charles' night stand. But mostly murder. Charles/Erik

: murder, prostitution, pretend!prostitution, corruption

"Twice Over" - WIP - Charlotte becomes Magda for one night, and meets the father of her child, a man who calls himself Magnus. Four years later, he's actually Erik Lehnsherr. Charles Xavier as a woman is different from Charles in many ways, but the biggest way, of course, is Anya, her daughter. Charles/Erik

Warnings: pregnancy, female Charles

"Semaphore" - Tony keeps making a bad impression on Steve, but he tries, and eventually, I think Steve realizes he's trying. They grow increasingly fond of each other, despite the obstacles of them being each other. Also, Tony Stark was such a fanboy or Capatain America, you don't even know. Tony/Steve

Warnings: references to suicide, depression, Tony Stark

"Two Out of Three (Ain't Bad)" - Or - the fic where Tony realizes he's ridiculously in love with Captain America, everyone else already knew, and so does Captain America - but not before Tony falls all over himself trying to do Nice Things in order to make Steve Rogers smile. Tony/Steve

Warnings: fluff, Tony Stark

Stargate Atlantis:

"Here, Every Language is Silent" - John falls into a coma, and Rodney fails to realized he's fallen for his best friend. Alost, John is inside Atlantis, and he can't find his way back to his body. John/Rodney

Warnings: coma, being in love with your best friend, Science fiction, trope

"Integration by Parts" - Rodney is horrified when John keeps failing to show up to school, and realizes he can't let that Mathematical potential go to waste, and so goes over to John's house to teach him Math. He should've listened to the gossip beforehand, though. It all ends well. Could be counted as gen.  John/Rodney

Warnings: minor character death, parental death, Math, high school, AU

 X-Men First Class:

"Apple Seeds" - This fic is extremely difficult to explain, but can most accurately be described as a deeper look on Charles Xavier, and  what it means to be a powerful telepath, as well as why he will never see things the way Erik does. The fic does a very good job of destroying the naivete that both Raven and Erik claim Charles possesses in spades, as well as offering little peeks into the short relationship Erik and Charles shared with each other. Charles/Erik

Warnings: mentions/talk/attempted suicide, depression, references to (literary) work outside of the Marvel Universe (in this case Shakespeare), references to/actual sex

"Work of Progress" - A different Charles and Erik in a different time, in which Erik is a vigilante and Charles is an artist. The author shows the subtle differences and similarities between this universe and the one that exists in X-Men First Class - the way Erik is the same person, and how Charles reacts differently in reflection of the society he lives in. Pretty short, but still satisfying and gives enough feels to be worth a rec. Charles/Erik

Warnings: Fusion fic, AU, vigilantism.

"Souls" - A really fascinating fic where Erik collects people's souls on Shaw's behest, believing he has none himself. He meets Charles and Charles sets him straight. Author describes it as a "really demented fairytale", but eerily a reflection of the original fairy tales, except for the fact there's a pretty happy ending - which makes this one a winner compared to the original Little Mermaid. Gen, but could be read as light Charles/Erik

Warnings: "slightly demented fairytale", soul-stealing

"Replay" - A fix-it amazingly, hilariously well done. Where older!Charles goes back into his younger self's body in order to seduce Erik to the path of light. The dark side may have cookies, but the light has awesome sex. This fic is awesomely feel-good, and I suggest it as a cure for the 98% of XMFC fics that are bound to break your heart.  Charles/Erik

Warnings: Charles in denial, references to/actual sex

"So Don't Be Afraid To Let Them Show" - A fic in thirty sentences, with Charles at the centre. Shows his struggles with identity, when the person he was born as isn't who he is.  Charles/Erik

Contains: Trans character

"Just Off The Key of Reason" - Brendon Urie meets The Joker, and whatever Stockholm/Lima syndrome develops afterwards is as close to love as these two will ever get close to. Meshes the bandom characters into the Marvel Universe to make them civilians in a crime-filled world. The Joker/Brendon Urie

Warnings: Possible stockholm/lima syndrome, psychopaths, violence, AU, crossover
